History of Polestar
Polestar is a Swedish high-performance electric vehicle (EV) brand that started as a racing team in 1996 and has since evolved into a standalone electric car manufacturer. It is now recognized for producing premium electric vehicles with innovative technology and Scandinavian design.
1. Origins as a Racing Team (1996–2015)
- 1996: Swedish racing driver Jan Nilsson founded Flash Engineering, a team competing in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC).
- 2005: Christian Dahl acquired the team and renamed it Polestar Racing.
- 2009: Polestar partnered with Volvo to develop high-performance versions of Volvo cars.
- 2015: Volvo acquired Polestar’s performance division, integrating it into its brand as the official performance tuning division.
2. Transition into an Independent Electric Vehicle Brand (2017–Present)
- 2017: Polestar was relaunched as a standalone EV brand, backed by Volvo Cars and its parent company Geely.
- 2018: Polestar introduced its first vehicle, the Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid coupe with 600 horsepower and a 150 km electric range (one of the longest for a PHEV).
- 2020: The Polestar 2 was released as the brand’s first all-electric model, competing directly with the Tesla Model 3.
- 2022: Polestar went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange, expanding its presence in global markets.
- 2023: The company launched its first electric SUV, the Polestar 3, followed by the Polestar 4, a coupe-style electric SUV.
3. Present and Future
Polestar is focused on sustainability, performance, and technology-driven electric mobility. It aims to produce carbon-neutral vehicles by 2030 and expand its lineup with new models such as the Polestar 5 (electric sports sedan) and Polestar 6 (electric roadster).
Polestar continues to evolve as a premium EV brand, combining performance, design, and sustainability to shape the future of electric driving.
